What does the Intek ESP Speech Processor do?

The Intek speech processor/compounder is a method used to get better clarity and louder signals on both receive and transmit.

This is particularly effective when two Intek CB's with this facility are talking to each other.

What guarantee do the CB's have?

The guarantee is 12 months from the date of purchase.

Output transistors (the component that can be damaged by a high SWR reading) are not covered, as it's the installers/users responsibility to make sure the SWR is acceptable.

Any physical damage, abuse or modification is not covered.

What is the 24v/12v autoswitching?

24v/12v autoswitching means that the CB radio can run from either a 12v (standard 4x4, car, van etc) or 24V (HGV's etc) supply, and automatically senses what voltage it's connected to and works accordingly. No adjustment by the user is needed.

Without this function, you would need a voltage dropper or reducer to fit a 12v CB into a 24v vehicle.

What is the small S-Meter socket on the back?

This is for an external signal meter... theres not currently any available in the UK, but when they were (and presumably they will be available again in the future) this allows you to plug in a larger "swinging needle" meter to get much more accurate readings of received signal.

This socket is not (as some people think) for an SWR meter... the SWR meter connects into the main aerial socket.

What is the ANL facility?

This is Automatic Noise Limiter and doesn't really make much difference on FM (the CB system we have legal in the UK), but if you were to travel abroad and use the AM mode, this facility helps to cut down on ignition and other "pulse" type interference.

What's so good about having toggle switches for some functions?

This is our opinion, formed over 12 years (from 1996) in the CB radio business and through 26 years of personally using CB radios...

With a toggle switch, you are actually making and breaking a connection that sends a signal down a wire to tell the processor that that switch has been switched.

With microswitches (the usual modern alternative), you're reliant on a small component to press onto another small component in order to send the same signal down the wire.

With continual use, microswitches can fail or start to get "crud" build up in the switch, which (due to their construction) can be very difficult to clean.

Toggle switches are also prone (sometimes even more so) to "crud" (dust particles, dirt etc), but they are easy to get to, and a quick spray of Switch Cleaner will normally sort them out again.

Toggle switches are also (in our opinion) more resistant to knocks than microswitches are, which is good for an offroad or farm vehicle.

What's so good about the President ASC system?

The standard squelch system found on all older CB's and quite a few current ones is one where you can set a signal level threshold, below which the sound is muted... the idea being that background hiss will be of a lower signal level than someone you might want to speak to, so with careful adjustment you can set the squelch to mute the background noise yet allow wanted signals through.

The trouble is that some background noise can be of varying signal levels, and sometimes wanted signals can drop below the threshold, and not be heard.

The current President ASC system consists of more than 40 microelectronic components to keep an intelligent ear on what is being received to decide if it's wanted signal or background noise.

It works well and is a very useful addition to these sets.

What is the AM/FM button?

AM and FM are the two different modes of transmission that the multi-standard CB's are capable of working on.

Only FM is legal in the UK, and most sets use this button to control band switching between the UK band and the EU band when on the UK frequency setting, and only actually switches between AM and FM when the CB is in the frequency setting of a country where AM is allowed.

Whats included with the CB Radio?

When buying a CB radio or package, you will get :

  • The CB Itself
  • Owners manual/instruction book
  • Microphone with curly lead & plug
  • Power lead for connection to battery or fusebox
  • Screw on mic clip (screw to dash or to side of rig)
  • Fixing bracket, side screws for the set to fix to bracket, and self-tapping screws to fit the bracket into your vehicle
  • Usually a spare fuse for the power lead
